Be Prepared for Cold and Flu Season

Cold and flu season—yuck! A little planning and organizing now can go a long way toward making this time of year easier to manage (and a little less miserable).

In an effort to avoid getting sick in the first place, wash your hands frequently with soap and water. It’s simple, but it’s one of the best habits you can build.

Next, take a look at your medicine cabinet. Make sure it’s stocked with the basics: cough suppressants, throat lozenges, pain relievers, fever reducers and nasal spray. Since most medicine cabinets are short on space, I often recommend decluttering first and then creating a small bin or basket to hold all your cold and flu essentials. As a home organizer, I’ve found this makes it much easier to grab what you need, especially when you’re not feeling your best.

It’s also helpful to keep a supply of tissues, antibacterial wipes and masks within easy reach. When everything is grouped together and easy to find, your home feels tidier and you’re less likely to scramble at the last minute.

With a little organization, you can hopefully avoid an unnecessary trip to the store when you’re already feeling lousy. But if you do need to venture out, do your part to protect others by helping contain germs.

Finally, think about what brings you comfort when you’re under the weather. Stock up on soup, tea and honey, and consider creating a cozy wellness basket with your favorite comforts: soft blankets, books you’ve been meaning to read or a list of shows to watch while you rest. Having everything ready ahead of time can make sick days feel far more manageable.
