Sometimes the most creative spaces in a home can also become the most cluttered. That was certainly the case with this craft and costume closet. Filled with costumes, craft supplies and stacks of old school projects, the space had become difficult to navigate. Finding anything inside the closet felt overwhelming and keeping it organized was nearly impossible.
When storage becomes overcrowded, even the most well-intentioned organizing efforts can fall apart. The goal for this project was to declutter the space and create systems that would make it easy for the whole family to maintain a tidy closet moving forward.

Designing a More Functional Closet
One of the main challenges in this closet was the lack of proper storage. A single shelf and rod simply wasn’t enough to support all the supplies stored inside. The first step in the organizing process was to remove everything from the closet. This allowed us to measure the space properly and design a more functional layout that would better support the family’s needs.

Sorting and Categorizing Craft Supplies
Once the closet was empty, we began sorting everything into categories. Costumes were separated from craft supplies, and the craft materials were further organized into smaller groups. This step is always essential when working as a home organizer because it allows us to see exactly what items are being stored and determine the best systems to keep them organized.
A big shout-out goes to this Denver mom who had already placed many of the craft supplies into small baggies. That simple step made it much easier to group similar items and create an organizing system that would work long term.

Using Clear Containers to Create a Tidy System
With the supplies sorted, we selected a variety of clear, stackable containers. Clear containers make organizing easier because you can quickly see what’s inside without digging through multiple bins. Even though the contents were visible, we also labeled each container to make it simple for the entire family to maintain a place for everything.

An Organized Craft Closet That Inspires Creativity
Once every item was contained and labeled, it was time to return everything to the closet. Each category now has its own designated container and every container has a home within the newly organized space. The result is a tidy craft closet that is easy to use and simple to maintain.

When organizing systems are designed thoughtfully, families spend less time searching for supplies and more time enjoying their activities. In this case, the kids can now focus on creating instead of digging through clutter.
