One of the most fun projects I’ve worked on was transforming a former bedroom into a dedicated craft room. My client shared that her grandchildren don’t sleep over as often now that they’re older, so she decided it was time to reimagine the space. Instead of an unused guest room, she wanted a functional area where all her craft supplies could live in one place. The goal was to declutter multiple areas of her home, create calm and design a space that made crafting easier and more enjoyable.
Before getting started, she walked me through her home to show me the wide variety of craft materials she had collected over the years. Supplies were stored in multiple locations, which made it difficult for her to see what she owned or fully enjoy the creative process. By bringing everything together into one organized space, we could create a place for everything and make the room both tidy and inspiring.
After assessing everything, I designed a layout that would maximize storage while also giving her a generous work surface. We used a customizable shelving system and repurposed some existing drawer units, shelves and a dresser. This combination created a functional workspace where she can easily see and access everything she needs without digging through piles or bins.

We also added a utility board above her work surface so tools are visible and within reach. This keeps frequently used items accessible while freeing up valuable drawer and counter space. Organizing tools vertically also helps maintain a tidy workspace and makes cleanup quick and easy after each project.
Everything in the room is categorized and labeled. Clear bins hold various craft supplies so contents can be seen at a glance. This system makes it simple to find what she needs and just as easy to return items to their designated home. Creating zones for different types of supplies ensures the room stays organized long-term.
Drawers were labeled to further reinforce the system. This makes it easy to maintain order and prevents items from being misplaced. Labels also help eliminate decision fatigue by clearly identifying where everything belongs.
To maximize storage, we used the back of both doors in the room by adding baskets for additional supplies. This often-overlooked space provided valuable storage without taking up floor area. Once again, everything was clearly labeled so the system remains easy to follow.

We sorted beads and paper by color, which not only looks beautiful but also makes crafting more efficient. When materials are organized visually, it’s easier to plan projects and quickly find the right supplies.
We even added stick-on lights to provide extra illumination while she works on her projects. Good lighting makes a big difference in both functionality and comfort, especially for detailed craft work.

My client shared that the finished space was more than she imagined and surpassed her expectations. Hearing that she now enjoys spending time in her organized craft room truly made my heart happy. Transforming this unused bedroom into a functional, tidy and inspiring space made it easier for her to enjoy her creativity.
