The SOS Spring Cleaning Guide: Tips From A Professional Organizer

Spring Cleaning Guide

Spring cleaning gets all the attention, but I’m more about spring organizing. When your stuff is neat and tidy, your home naturally feels cleaner. Think about it.  You can give your home a fresh, clean feel without picking up a dust cloth.  Now don’t get me wrong, clean is great.  I love clean!  But an uncluttered home looks cleaner than a clean home full of clutter.

Organizing and cleaning truly go hand in hand. When clutter is reduced, surfaces are easier to wipe down, storage areas function better and maintaining your home becomes much simpler.

If you’re ready for a fresh start, think of this as your SOS Spring Cleaning Guide. Start by focusing on organizing first, then layer in light cleaning as you go. You’ll create calm while also making your home easier to maintain.

Start with a quick reset. Turn on some music, set a timer for 30 minutes and begin decluttering. When you limit your time, it feels less overwhelming and helps you build momentum. Toss items that bother you every time you see them, whether it’s broken décor, unread magazines or things you no longer use. An uncluttered home looks cleaner even before you pick up a sponge.

Coat closets and entryways are a great place to begin. Sort boots, hats, scarves and winter gear. If you didn’t use them this year, consider donating them. Transition the space so rain jackets, hoodies and lighter accessories are easy to access. While you’re in the entryway, create a simple mail system. Take a few minutes each day to sort mail immediately so paper doesn’t pile up. Keeping a recycle bin and shredder nearby helps maintain a tidy drop zone.

Closets are another powerful reset area. Ask yourself if you would buy each item again today. If not, it may be time to let it go. This includes clothing, shoes and even accessories like socks or undergarments that are worn out. Decluttering your closet creates more breathing room and ensures a place for everything you actually wear.

In the kitchen and pantry, do a quick sweep for items you don’t use. Toss expired food and group similar items together such as snacks, breakfast items and canned goods. When everything is categorized, the space feels more organized and easier to maintain. This is also a great time to wipe shelves and refresh surfaces while they’re clear.

Bathrooms benefit from a similar approach. Remove expired medications, unused beauty products and samples that are just taking up space. Clearing out these areas makes your morning routine more efficient. Once decluttered, give shelves and drawers a quick wipe for an instant refresh.

Flat surfaces throughout the home are also worth attention. Kitchen counters, nightstands, dressers and desks quickly become clutter magnets. Reducing what lives on these surfaces instantly makes your home look cleaner and tidier, even before deep cleaning begins.

Don’t forget areas like electronics and garages. Gather random cords, outdated devices and unused tech for recycling. In the garage, move winter gear higher up and bring spring and summer items within easy reach. A quick sweep of the floor removes winter debris and helps the space feel refreshed.

As you organize, layer in simple cleaning habits. Disinfect garbage cans, wipe blinds with a vacuum brush attachment, clean drains with baking soda and vinegar, and sanitize appliances like your washer, dryer and dishwasher. Keeping a portable cleaning caddy makes it easier to move from room to room while you work. These small cleaning tasks paired with organizing create a noticeable difference in how your home feels.

The goal of spring organizing isn’t perfection. It’s about creating a home that feels lighter, more functional and easier to maintain. When you declutter and give everything a place, cleaning becomes faster and less stressful. That’s when you truly create calm and enjoy the fresh start that spring brings.
