“I’ll get to it later.” “I’ll do it tomorrow.” “I just don’t feel like it right now.”
I’ve said these words to myself more times than I can count. Truth be told, probably on a daily basis.
Even as a home organizer, I’m not immune to procrastination. There’s always that one task that keeps getting pushed to the bottom of the list. For me, it’s been something simple like cleaning the baseboards. I know it won’t take long, but somehow it keeps getting postponed.
Procrastination is incredibly common. Many people struggle to get started on tasks they perceive as unpleasant, even when those tasks are quick and manageable. Lack of time, lack of motivation and sometimes just plain avoidance can all contribute. Unfortunately, when we delay small tasks, they tend to pile up. What started as one simple chore turns into a long list that feels overwhelming. That’s when clutter builds, routines slip and it becomes harder to maintain a tidy and organized home.
One simple shift that has helped many of my clients and me is turning a traditional to-do list into a to-day list. Instead of writing down everything that needs to be done eventually, focus on just a few tasks that can realistically be completed today. I recommend limiting the list to five items. This makes the list feel manageable and helps reduce the mental clutter that comes from seeing dozens of unfinished tasks.
When your list is short, it’s easier to take action. Completing even a few small tasks creates momentum. Make the bed, declutter the junk drawer, plan meals for the week or finally sew on that missing button. These small wins add up quickly. Crossing off five items a day means you’ve completed 35 tasks by the end of the week. That kind of progress builds confidence in your ability to stay organized.
Another benefit of the to-day list is that it encourages consistency. Instead of waiting for a full day to tackle everything at once, you’re making steady progress. This approach helps prevent clutter from building and supports the idea of creating a place for everything. When small tasks are handled regularly, your home stays more tidy and easier to maintain.
Procrastination doesn’t disappear overnight, but small changes in your routine can make a big difference. Choose a few manageable tasks, stay consistent and celebrate your progress. You may be surprised at how quickly your space begins to feel more organized and peaceful.
