When I received a call from a Denver family asking for help, I knew right away that this project would be both emotional and rewarding. The previous year, while the family was out of the country, an upstairs bathroom leak went unnoticed for too long. By the time it was discovered, water had damaged all three floors of their home. A restoration company was brought in to dry out the space and pack up every belonging so repairs and renovations could begin.

Nearly a year later, after the home had finally been restored, it was time for the family to move back in. That’s when Smart Organizing Solutions stepped in to help unpack and organize their home again.

Unpacking after a situation like this is very different from a typical move. When restoration companies pack belongings quickly in order to protect them, items often end up mixed together without any real system. As a home organizer, I opened boxes that contained a surprising mix of items – dishes alongside children’s clothing, Christmas decorations next to gardening tools. There was no clear order which made the process of unpacking and organizing especially challenging.

Adding to the difficulty, not everything that had been packed away was completely dry. Unfortunately, the family lost many precious belongings along the way, including photos, beloved stuffed animals and several pieces of furniture. It was heartbreaking to see how much had been affected. Despite those losses, the family remained focused on moving forward and rebuilding their home.

Our work began by sorting through every box and grouping items by category. This step allowed us to declutter anything that was no longer usable and focus on what the family truly needed in their restored home. From there, we began organizing each space with intention so there would be a place for everything.

Together, we transformed the kitchen, playroom and basement storage area into organized and functional spaces. Cabinets and shelves were arranged in ways that made daily routines easier, helping the family maintain a tidy home moving forward. Creating simple organizing systems brought a sense of structure back into their space and helped restore peace of mind after such a difficult year.
