Organizing: How to Begin

We all want a simpler home. A space that feels calm instead of chaotic. But how do you actually get there?

You begin by evaluating your space.

Whether it’s your pantry, your closet or the kids’ playroom, pause for a moment and notice how you feel when you walk in. Do you feel focused and productive? Or do you feel distracted and stressed? Your reaction tells you a lot.

How often do you search for a specific ingredient, a favorite shirt or that one missing toy? Have you ever purchased something again because you couldn’t find the original? These are common signs that it’s time to declutter and rethink your organizing systems.

The issue usually isn’t that you shop too much. The real problem is not knowing what you already own or where it lives. When you know what you have and can easily access it, you naturally make better decisions.  As a home organizer, I once worked with a client who discovered she owned more than a dozen 3-hold punches. She had no idea because they were scattered throughout the house. Once we decluttered and created a place for everything, the duplicates stopped.

Every organizing project follows the same basic principles, no matter the room. The items may change, but the process does not.

First, acknowledge reality. If you have more than you can reasonably use, it’s okay. Recognizing that excess is the first step toward change. When you accept that you don’t need to keep everything, it becomes easier to let go.

Next, ask yourself an important question: does everything have a home? If an item does not have a designated space, it will continue to float from surface to surface. That’s how clutter builds. A place for everything truly is the foundation of a tidy home. When items have clear homes, they are easier to find and easier to put away.

Organizing is not about perfection. It is about function and peace of mind. When your home supports your daily routines, you create calm and reduce stress.

Take a thoughtful look at the spaces that frustrate you most. Notice what feels disorganized and what feels manageable. Small observations lead to meaningful change.
