Smart Ways to Organize Spices

As a home organizer serving Denver and the surrounding Colorado communities, I truly believe that organizing should feel practical, personal, and sustainable. One of the simplest examples of this philosophy lives right in my own kitchen.

I love to cook, and one of the small things that brings me joy is opening a cupboard and seeing neat rows of spices. It’s not about perfection or picture-perfect containers. It’s about knowing exactly what I have and being able to grab it quickly. That sense of order helps create calm in the middle of a busy day.

Many people assume that because I specialize in organizing, everything in my home is decanted into matching jars with identical labels. The truth? Not necessarily. While a uniform look can be beautiful, it isn’t required to create a tidy, functional space. There is no single “right” way to organize spices or anything else in your home. The goal is to declutter what you don’t use and create a place for everything that remains.

Every home in Denver, Central Park, Park Hill, Wash Park, Aurora, Cherry Creek, Superior, Lafayette and Louisville is different. Some have walk-in pantries. Others have generous cabinet space but limited drawers. Some rely heavily on vertical storage. That’s why working with a professional home organizer is so valuable – your organizing systems should be tailored to your space and your habits.

In my own kitchen, I use an adjustable three-tier shelf inside a cabinet. It allows me to see everything at a glance. I keep the spices I use most often in front and the less frequently used ones in the back. It’s simple, efficient and easy to maintain. That’s what matters most. Organizing should support your lifestyle, not complicate it.

If you prefer a more streamlined look, matching containers and consistent labels can certainly enhance the visual appeal. Just be sure they seal properly to keep spices fresh. Short on cabinet space? Drawers can work beautifully, especially when labeled on top for quick visibility. No drawers or cabinets available? Consider using wall space with a mounted rack to maximize vertical storage.

Mount a piece of metal inside the door and place your spices in magnetic jars. This would be too much work for me…again with the decanting and labeling. But it is pretty and organized. 🙂

For those of you who do want a more uniform look, buy containers that match, use the same font size for all of your labels and then put the label in the same place on each jar. You can buy spice containers almost anywhere. I recommend that you make sure they seal properly so your spices stay fresh.

Short on cupboard space? Tuck spices in a drawer.

The real takeaway isn’t about spices. It’s about intention. When you declutter what no longer serves you and create a place for everything you choose to keep, your home becomes easier to manage. It feels lighter, more functional and peaceful.

That’s the power of thoughtful organizing. It’s not about perfection. It’s about creating systems that give you peace of mind and help you create calm in your everyday life.
