It’s GO Month: A Professional Organizer’s Guide to Getting Organized

Did you know that getting organized consistently ranks as one of the most common goals people set for themselves? And honestly, it makes perfect sense. An organized home creates more time, more space and more peace of mind. When your home feels tidy and functional, everyday life simply runs more smoothly.

As a professional home organizer, I work with families throughout Denver, Central Park, Park Hill, Cherry Creek, Aurora and surrounding Colorado communities to declutter, create organizing systems tailored to real life and develop simple strategies that make it easier to keep homes tidy over the long run.

One of the biggest misconceptions about organizing is that you have to tackle your entire house all at once. That kind of thinking can feel so overwhelming that many people never get started at all.

Instead, start small.

START SMALL WHEN ORGANIZING

Rather than saying, “I need to organize my whole house,” choose one specific project with a clear goal.

Maybe you want to:

  • organize your closet so mornings feel less stressful
  • declutter the garage so you can finally park your car inside
  • tackle the kitchen pantry so meal prep becomes easier
  • organize paperwork so you can stop feeling overwhelmed by piles

Breaking a large organizing project into smaller, manageable tasks helps you build momentum and confidence. And once you complete one small area, it becomes much easier to move on to the next.

ORGANIZING IS ALSO ABOUT HABITS

Organizing is not just about moving items around or buying containers. Long-term organization often requires us to look at our habits and routines so we can create systems that actually support daily life.

I often compare my role as a home organizer to that of a personal trainer. Most people already know the basics of staying organized, but sometimes they need support, accountability and practical strategies to make lasting progress.

That’s where simple systems make all the difference.

When everything has a place, it becomes much easier to maintain a tidy home and create calm instead of chaos.

WHEN ORGANIZING, SORT AND CATEGORIZE

Once you’ve chosen a project, take everything out of the space and sort items into four simple categories:

  1. Keep
  2. Donate
  3. Trash
  4. Belongs Somewhere Else

I recommend using bags or bins for each category as you work. This keeps the process organized and prevents piles from spreading throughout the house.

At the end of your organizing session:

  • take trash out immediately
  • place donation items in your car
  • relocate items that belong in other rooms
  • focus only on the space you’re currently organizing

Small steps like these help prevent unfinished projects from becoming more clutter.

CREATE A PLACE FOR EVERYTHING

Once you’re left with only the items you truly want and use, it’s time to organize them in a functional way.

The items you use most often should be stored in the easiest-to-reach spaces — typically between knee and shoulder height. Store rarely used or seasonal items higher up or farther back.

The goal is not perfection. The goal is creating systems that make your life easier.

And remember: there is no single “right” way to organize. The best organizing system is the one that works for your family, your habits and your daily routine.

CELEBRATE YOUR PROGRESS

One of the most important parts of organizing is acknowledging your progress. Whether you organized one drawer, one shelf or an entire room, you’ve taken steps toward creating a calmer, more functional home.

Those small wins matter.

And over time, those small organizing projects add up to major transformation.
